edges is proud to be a bridge church!
what does this mean? you may be aware that united methodist churches all over the united states are disaffiliating with the umc. a provision was added to the book of discipline that allows disaffiliation “over issues related to human sexuality” through the end of 2023. church communities whose members are opposed to the full inclusion of lgbtq+ people have used this provision to leave the denomination. many of these churches have members who opposed the decision to disaffiliate and support the lgbtq+ community's right to marry and be ordained.
as a bridge church, edges is saying "welcome" to these former members, who are likely transitioning between churches and grieving the loss of their previous communities. identifying as a bridge church solidifies our commitment to advocacy for both the lgbtq+ community's right to marry and preach and for the allies who refuse to make their home in a church that has eliminated this possibility. learn more about bridge churches here →
